ENCORE ! Une exposition personnelle d’Ana Jotta is an artist’s book by Ricardo Valentim prompted by the 2013 exhibition ENCORE ! by Ana Jotta at gb agency / Level One in Paris. While the publication resembles a catalogue for Ana Jotta’s exhibition, it functions somewhat differently.

In recent years, commercial art galleries have gotten bigger and more ambitious in their programs. For instance, many have become publishing powerhouses, producing a significant number of exhibition catalogues every year. These catalogues have become more than mere exhibition records; they act as key devices in legitimating artworks, artists’ careers, and artistic promotion. Despite their sometimes lavish production values, they are characterized by their generic formats and bland layouts. Focusing mainly on the reproduction of artworks and the commission of new texts from celebrated academics or hip writers, these catalogues operate as cultural artifacts that aim to define taste and high art for those who consume them.

ENCORE ! Une exposition personnelle d’Ana Jotta responds to these phenomena, by problematizing any categorical clarity around the production of an “exhibition catalogue.” The publication is not directly concerned with Ana Jotta’s work per se, but rather acts as a critical site for interrogating forms of promotion and supporting materials produced by commercial galleries. Through challenging texts by Ricardo Nicolau, photographic documentation of Ana Jotta’s exhibition, the press release, checklist of the works, and other elements that comprise her solo-exhibition, ENCORE ! Une exposition personnelle d’Ana Jotta offers an abstract and subjective perspective on these materials based on a novel reading of Ana Jotta’s work.

This is the third publication in a series of artist’s books produced by Ricardo Valentim since 2012, that includes The New Typography, which expands on the form of a type-specimen book, and Models of Democracy, which examines the form of an academic book. ENCORE ! Une exposition personnelle d’Ana Jotta wraps up the series, but may eventually lead to something else.
